Poem from the Past
A throwback to poems I wrote when I was younger
Life's Beauty
Blue Skies
a soft breeze
dirty lies
what a compromise!
flowers blooming
colors
so bright in a meadow
the warmth of the sun
so round and yellow
I hear a bird song
and listen along
and hum the tune ti'll the birds are gone
I play in the grass
do cartwheels
and laugh
as I realize the beautiful music of nature
as the day turns cold
a breeze
soft and bold
carries along the memories before
I fly my kite
then say goodnight
but I also say
see you sunrise!
then I close my eyes
About Me

Hello! My name is Hallie Elizabeth Slidell, and I absolutley love poetry. I am 15 years old, and I have been running this poetry blog for almost five years. Many years ago I won the young authors contest for Montgomery County with one of my favorite poems that I wrote, "The Parade on Hammond Street" in 5th grade. Now, I am a sophomore at Stone Ridge, and I love to play field hockey, ice hockey and run track.
I love writing poems, but I also love photography, and you will see some examples of photos that I have taken on this website. Recently in my photography class at school, we developed photos from film for a project, and I look forward to sharing those photos here as well. I think that poems and photographs can tell you the meaning of something without actually saying what it is. There are many small stories and fun things to discover hidden within art, and I have always enjoyed figuring things out. I hope you are excited to discover new stories too!
Poet of the month
The poet of the month is Amanda Gorman, who uses her poetic voice to bring awareness to issues on oppression, feminism, race, and marginalization, among other subjects. She is well known for reading her poem, "The Hill We Climb" at the current President Biden's inauguration. She is the youngest poet in history to recite a poem at a presidential inauguration. She is the author of a few award-winning books and has won many impressive awards for her work.
"For there is always light,
if only we're brave enough to see it,
if only we're brave enough to be it"
"If we merge mercy
with might.
and might with right.
then love
becomes our legacy."
"Quiet isn't always peace,
and the norms and the notions of what just is, isn't always justice."

Recreating a Beowulf Boast
Hwæt! I am the hallowed Hallie,
Who hails from where Slidell city stands upon Spring street.
The land of Mary is my motherland,
Yet my ancient ancestors claim origin from Elláda and the realm of the maple leaves.
In my awesome adventures, I have been appreciated for the abilities I hold in my arsenal.
I have mountain-walked the highest of heights,
And belly-surfed the most colossal of whirly waves.
I have defeated poisonous silk-spinners as large as the paw of a great dane;
With my bare hands and a will that will never bend nor break.
I have climbed lean leaf-holders that are as lengthy as the top of a living-place,
And spied on scoundrels who throw spheres at one another in the small streets.
I can find tactless thieves and disagreeable deceivers with the tiniest hint,
And persuade even the most fearsome foes to do what I desire.
With my trusty candy-cane
Made from ceremonially crafted carbon,
And my hand-protector
Which helps me harness the power of my famous left hand,
I can knock over enormous enemies
Without touching a hair on their head.
My wondrous weapons are marvelous materials;
That which spread legends of my triumphant treks far and wide.
Yet the praise for my admirable accomplishments,
Belongs to the sharpness and shining ability of my remarkably magnificent mind.
